MISSIONS
A few years ago someone at church said to me "Hey, we're going to Mexico on a mission trip to build a house for the poor. Would you like to go?" My response was a resounding "Uh, sure". I think that's how it went...
That was in 2002. In January 2003, I went on my first trip to Juarez, Mexico (across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas); a typical "border town". You can read my stories or see photos of the trips by clicking the links below ("My Journals").
The underlying idea of the trip is to take people who earn about $5.00/day*
out of a cardboard-box and pallet house and put them into a dry home with
insulation, a roof and a floor. I have been going every January ever since that
time. When I leave Juarez, I look back at the filth and wonder what impact I
had... and my solace is that there is at least one family that is better off
than they were when I arrived!

*The Mexican government suppresses their people and encourages them to flee to the USA! There is no social system, no national health care system, no governmental support whatsoever. The reward: $20 Billion dollars gets sent back to relatives from the USA every year. More than Mexico receives in foreign aid!

About Casas Por Cristo: CpC is the liaison group in El Paso that we work with. The 2007 summer season brought their 3000th house! They have since expanded operations into Acuna, Mexico and now in Guatemala. If your church would like to organize a group to make the journey to El Paso/Juarez, call or e-mail me for details. I would love to see a strong Michigan presence in Texas. CpC site:
